How to plan your Hampi Itinerary? – A Travel Guide with Cost breakdown

Introduction To Hampi

Hampi, located in the southern state of Karnataka in India, was once the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. 

Hampi, a World Heritage Site, has captivated travellers for centuries with its surreal landscape and magnificent ruins.

The city, known for its architectural splendour, flourished during the 14th to 16th centuries. Hampi was a centre of trade and commerce, attracting merchants and travellers from far and wide. 

The empire’s rulers were great patrons of art and literature, and their legacy is visible in the temples, palaces, and other structures that dot the landscape. However, the city was ravaged by war and invasions, leading to its decline in the 16th century. 

Today, Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts visitors from all over the world who marvel at its magnificent ruins and learn about its rich history.

While it’s possible to explore Hampi in a day or two, I recommend staying longer to fully immerse yourself in the beauty and history of this enchanting place. 

Getting Around Hampi

Exploring the sites in Hampi can be a bit of a trek, as they are spread out across four different clusters. Each cluster takes around 3-4 hours to explore thoroughly, with plenty of walking involved (at least 4-5 kilometers per cluster). Therefore, use of local transportation becomes a must.

Auto Rickshaw: The Auto Rickshaw, also known as tuk-tuk, is the preferred mode of transportation for exploring various sites in Hampi. If you wish, you can even hire one for the entire day. These auto rickshaws are readily available at the stand located near Hampi Bazaar, at any time of the day.

Car rental: This is the most convenient choice for Hampi travelers, particularly if you are not constrained by a tight budget. It will also allow you to cover places that are far away from Hampi.

If you have enough time and energy, you can also consider renting a bicycle or a moped as an alternative option. There are various vendors in the Hampi Bazaar vicinity that offer hourly bicycle rental services.

It’s important to bear in mind that the entry of rental mopeds or bikes is presently closely monitored in the protected areas of Hampi. Only rental vehicles with proper registration documentation are allowed.  

Main Areas In Hampi

Hampi, which spans an area of 36 square kilometres, offers approximately 3700 monuments to discover. 

The ruins are categorized into two primary regions: the Sacred Centre, which includes the religious sites, and the Royal Centre & Around, which encompasses the royal structures.

          A 3-DAY HAMPI ITINERARY 

Day 1: Sacred Centres 

1. Virupaksha Temple 

The Virupaksha Temple, devoted to the worship of Lord Shiva, is regarded as one of India’s oldest and most active temples, with its roots tracing back to the 7th century.

The temple is a stunning example of the Vijayanagara architectural style, featuring intricate carvings and sculptures that will leave you in awe. The temple complex also includes:

• A massive gateway tower.
• A beautiful pillared hall.
• A sacred pond where devotees come to take a dip. 

Visitors to the Virupaksha Temple can experience Hampi’s rich culture and history and marvel at the architectural brilliance of the Vijayanagara Empire.

Entry Fees: INR 2 plus an extra INR 50 if you bring a still camera.

Opening Hours: 6 am to 6 pm.

2. Lakshmi Narasimha 

An interesting stop off along the road to Virupaksha temple is a 6.7-meter monolithic statue of this divine figure, carved from a single piece of granite. 

This impressive sculpture depicts Lakshmi Narasimha in a seated posture, with bulging eyes and a majestic mane of hair.

The statue is a testament to the incredible skill of the sculptors who crafted it, and it continues to be a crowd-puller.

3. Krishna Temple 

Krishna Temple is a magnificent ancient temple in the heart of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage monument.

The Shree Krishna Temple, located near Lakshmi Narasimha, was constructed during the Vijayanagara Empire and is devoted to Lord Krishna, regarded as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu in Hindu mythology. 

The temple’s design combines Dravidian and Hoysala styles with elaborate carvings and sculptures depicting different aspects of Lord Krishna’s life.

This temple is near Lakshmi Narasimha. 

Entry Fees: Free

Opening Hours: 6 am to 6 pm.

4. Vittala Temple or Vitthala Temple

In Hampi, visiting the Vittala temple is highly recommended and considered a must-see attraction. 

The temple has a rich historical significance and is renowned for its iconic stone chariot, a remarkable architectural feat. It is imperative to add a trip to the Vittala temple to your Hampi itinerary.

Typically, a visit to the temple takes around 1.5 hours, during which you can admire its stunning musical pillars and the awe-inspiring stone chariot.

Entry fee: 30 INR for Indian nationals. INR 500 for Foreigners. 

Opening Hours: 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.

I recommend visiting the Tungabhadra River in the evening to watch the sunset. Take a boat ride, relax on the riverbank, and enjoy the stunning views.

5. Hemakuta Hill Temple Complex

To the south, overlooking Virupaksha temple, has many early ruins, including monolithic sculptures of Narasimha and Ganesh.

One can witness the mesmerizing golden sunset over the boulder mountain tops of Hampi. It’s worth taking a short walk up there for the stunning view.

Opening Hours: 6 am to 6 pm.

6. Sule Bazaar and Achyutaraya Temple

Sule Bazaar, a historic market, was once a bustling centre of commerce in ancient Hampi and is located between the Hampi Bazaar and the Vittala Temple. 

Stroll through the market and admire the finely carved pillars that were once a part of the pavilions lining the street. In its heyday, Sule Bazaar was known for its gems, pearls, and ivory, making it a must-visit destination for history buffs and shoppers alike.

Don’t miss the Achyutaraya Temple at the southern end of the market, which is a popular attraction. Under the reign of King Achyuta Deva Raya, a magnificent temple was built, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region to all who visited.

Day 2: Royal Centre & Around

1. Royal Enclosure 

The Royal Enclosure in Hampi was the central hub of the Vijayanagara Empire, and today, it is a fascinating set of ruins that offers a glimpse into the past. 

The fortified area spans over 59,000 square meters and was home to the royal family and their court. The enclosure was once home to over 45 buildings, including palaces, temples, canals, and water tanks. While the temples were made of stone, the palaces were often constructed of wood. 

The Royal Enclosure in Hampi boasts several impressive structures, but the Mahanavami Dibba (ruins), also known as the Dussehra Platform, and the King’s Audience Hall are the true highlights. Visitors should also check out the stepped tank, a remarkable feat of engineering from the Vijayanagara Empire.

The Hazara Rama temple, Granaries, and Palace of Krishnadevaraya are other notable ruins in the Royal Center, while the Zenana enclosure is located nearby.

2. Queen’s Bath

Any Hampi itinerary should include visiting the Queen’s Bath, a stunning example of Indo-Islamic architecture. 

This rectangular pool and veranda were once a favourite spot for Vijayanagara monarchs to indulge in, despite both Kings and Queens using the pool. 

While the exterior may seem plain, the interior boasts intricate details such as extended balconies and beautifully carved domes. Don’t miss out on this lavish bathing area during your visit to Hampi.

3. Lotus Mahal 

Lotus Mahal, also known as Chitragani Mahal, is a beautiful palace located inside the Zenana Enclosure.

The palace was once used by the queens and princesses of the Vijayanagara Empire for relaxation, entertainment, and meetings. The mahal is known for its stunning architecture and intricate carvings.

Entry fee: INR 10 (Visitors can access this site using an entry ticket for the Vittala Temple.)

Opening hours: 8 am to 6 pm.

4. Elephant Stables 

The Elephant Stables in Hampi is a fascinating piece of history that draws in many tourists. 

Once home to the royal elephants, this structure has remained in great condition despite its age. The stables feature a series of domes and arches and are a great example of the Vijayanagara architectural style.

It’s a popular spot for taking photos and worth adding to your Hampi itinerary.

Entry Fee: INR 10 (Visitors can access this site using an entry ticket for the Vittala Temple).

Openining hours: 8 AM to 6 PM

5. Matanga Hill

Matanga Hills is a prominent attraction known for its breathtaking views and thrilling trek uphill. 

The hill rises about 300 meters above sea level, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding landscapes, including the Tungabhadra River and the ruins of Hampi. 

The trek uphill is challenging but rewarding, with well-defined steps leading to the summit. 

At the top, visitors can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere and soak in the picturesque sunrise and sunset views. 

If you are an adventure enthusiast, nature lover, or seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of city life, add this to your Hampi itinerary.

Day 3 

Hampi Bazaar 

The historical Hampi Bazaar, also known as Virupaksha Bazaar, is situated adjacent to the Hampi bus stand. The bazaar is home to a diverse range of shops that sell souvenirs and traditional handicrafts. Visitors can indulge in local street food at numerous nearby food stalls. The Hampi Bazaar is operational from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm.

Hampi Archaeological Museum

The museum offers a collection of artefacts and exhibits that showcase Hampi’s rich history and culture. You can also take a guided museum tour to learn more about exhibitions.

Entry fee: INR 5

Opening hours: 10 am to 5 pm. (Closed on Fridays).

                                          Around Hampi l 3-day Hampi Itinerary

Anegundi

Anegundi, a small town near Hampi, was once the capital of the Vijayanagar Empire. Despite losing prominence, Anegondi retains its rural charm and traditional crafts. 

Visitors can take a coracle boat (costing INR 10) across the Tungabhadra River to reach the town. 

While there, explore the few remaining ruins of Anegundi’s fortified wall and fort gates and the beautiful Pampa Sarovar, Rishimukh Hill, and Gagan Mahal. Anegondi offers a unique glimpse into the history and culture of the region.

Anjanadri Hill, Monkey Temple 

Anjanadri Hill, located just 5 km from Hampi, is a must-visit tourist destination. It is known for being the birthplace of Lord Hanuman, the revered monkey god in Hindu mythology. 

The hill is surrounded by lush plantain and paddy fields, and visitors can climb to the top via over 550 stone stairs.

Monkeys are a common sight on the hill, especially near the Hanuman temple at the summit. The temple, also known as the monkey temple, is a significant attraction of Anjeyanadri Hill. Inside the temple, visitors can see a rock-carved image of Hanuman.

How To Reach Hampi 

By Train 

Hampi has no railway station, but travellers can easily reach it from the nearby Hospet station, just 13km away. From Hospet, travellers can hop on a local bus or hire an auto-rickshaw to take them to the charming town of Hampi.

In addition, Hampi is well connected to major cities and towns in Karnataka through bus services provided by both the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and private/tourist bus operators from neighbouring areas.

By Road

Hampi boasts a well-connected network of roads that make it easily accessible to visitors. 

The roads link Hampi to various towns and cities in Karnataka, making it a convenient location to visit. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operates frequent bus services to and from Hampi, further improving the accessibility of the site. 

By Air

The nearest domestic airport is Bellary, 60 km away. Bellary offers limited flight connectivity with various cities in India.

Another option is Hubli Airport, which is 171 km away from Hampi, but Bengaluru is the major international airport (290 km from Ballari). Search for the flights here.

Accommodation Cost & Places To Stay in Hampi

A budget hotel room can cost around INR 1500 onwards per night, while mid-range options can cost around INR 3000 onwards (double occupancy) per night. The luxury accommodations cost around INR 40,000 (double occupancy) per night. 

Homestays are also popular in Hampi, with prices ranging from INR 900 onwards per night. 

Hospet offers a lavish atmosphere with its top-notch hotels such as Royal Orchid Central Kireeti and the extravagant Orange County Hampi Resort in Kamalapura, both of which provide a luxurious experience. Additionally, there are other Hampi resorts available as well.

Alternatively, decent guesthouses/ homestays or budget hotels in Hampi are typically situated in two areas: near the main bazaar and bus stand, or on the other side of the river in Virupapur Gadde, also known as Hippie Island. The latter location attracts a significant number of backpackers who opt to stay in this area during their visit to Hampi.

Transportation Cost 

Fight tickets cost around INR 3500 per person, one way (Bengaluru to Hubli). Search for flights to Hubli on Skyscanner.  

The average taxi cost from Hubli airport to Hampi is around INR 2500+, and from Hospet railway station, it is around INR 500 to INR 1000. You can check the exact cab price on Cab Bazar.

Buses are a more economical option, with tickets ranging from INR 350 per person (Bangalore to Hospet) to INR 1500 (AC Sleeper) per person. The cost depends on the type of bus (regular, AC sleeper and so on) and your boarding destination. You can check options on Red Bus.

Local transportation in Hampi is predominantly by auto-rickshaws and bicycles, with auto-rickshaws (Tuk Tuk) charging around INR 400 to INR 600 for a day’s travel. Please negotiate when hiring an auto either from Hospet railway station to Hampi or for your day trips.

 

Sightseeing Cost

The entry fee for popular attractions in Hampi, such as Anjaneya Hill, Hemakuta Hill Temple Complex, Vittala Temple Complex, the Lotus Mahal and likewise, ranges from INR 20 to INR 40 per person (for Indian citizens).

Hiring a local guide: 

Remember to hire a guide in order to fully experience the magic of the past.

There are authorized guides who can accompany you and provide insights on the significance and history of the places you visit. Although they may embellish the story at times, it’s still worthwhile to listen to their explanations as they bring the grandeur and royalty of the place to life.

Guides usually charge around INR 1500-2000, but you can negotiate with them to come up with a mutually agreeable arrangement.

Food Cost

Hampi offers various dining options, from street food to restaurants. There are so many stalls offering the taste of typical south Indian food in Hampi. Hampi’s restaurants also serve continental food for their food lovers. My all-time favorite restaurant is Mango tree. It’s a must-visit.

The cost of food can vary depending on the type of cuisine and the restaurant’s ambience. Street food options are available for as low as INR 30 to INR 50 per plate, while a complete meal in a restaurant can cost around INR 200 to INR 500 per person. 

Please note that as Hampi holds great religious importance, all restaurants in the area refrain from serving non-vegetarian food and prohibit alcohol consumption.

Miscellaneous Cost

Miscellaneous expenses can include tips, souvenirs, and any other personal expenses. It is advisable to keep a buffer amount of around INR 2000 to INR 3000 for such costs.

Best Time To Visit Hampi

The best season to explore Hampi is the winter, from November to early March. During this time, the climate is agreeable, and the temperature typically falls between 15°C to 30°C. Additionally, this time also marks the festival season in Hampi, which usually takes place in November. This is a three-day celebration that brings the ancient ruins to life with a vibrant array of performances such as dance, music, drama, puppet shows, and fireworks.. 

In addition, the classical music festival in January or February and the Virupaksha Car Festival in March or April are other noteworthy events that you might want to experience. The Virupaksha Car Festival is particularly grand, representing the annual marriage ceremony of the goddesses and gods.
